Risk management is vital when it comes to athletic facilities. Catastrophic accidents can occur in a facility that is not properly maintained. Hundreds of people fill the bleachers for sporting events. Heavy equipment is mounted above the heads of the athletes and patrons. Basketball backstops can weigh up to 1,000 pounds. These backstops are used on a daily basis and overtime can experience some of these problems; bolts working themselves loose, cables fraying and losing structural integrity as well as the motors and cables getting out of alignments. Many existing gymnasiums aren’t equipped with safety straps. Safety straps prevent a backstop from falling in the event of a cable breaking and are required by law in some states. The most important backstops to add safety straps are the backstops over the bleachers.
What needs to be done to insure a safe athletic facility? Athletic equipment should be inspected for loose bolts, frayed cables and motor wear. Attachment point clamps should be checked to make sure they are secured in place and there are no signs of damage. Bleachers need to be inspected for loose bolts; straight cantilever arms and are tracking correctly. Athletic floors should be cleaned and resealed this will provide proper traction for the athletes as well as increase the life of the floor. This equipment needs to be evaluated on a prescribed interval to assure that it is operating efficiently and safely. It should be evaluated semi-annually but at least annually.
